Where to Stay in Istanbul: A First-Timer's Neighborhood Guide

Most first-time visitors end up booking a hotel in a district they know nothing about. But the neighborhood you choose doesn't just decide how close you are to the sights — it also directly determines your airport transfer time and price. In this guide we compare four popular Istanbul districts, each with its own character — historic old town, nightlife, quiet Bosphorus charm, and local Asian-side life — using the real distance, duration and fixed-price data from our own route database.

What Should You Consider When Choosing a Neighborhood?

Three questions make the decision easier: are the sights you want to see within walking distance, or will you rely on taxis and ferries every day; do you want a quiet base or one close to restaurants and nightlife; and which airport will you land at. Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) sit on opposite sides of the city, so the transfer time to the same neighborhood can differ by more than 20 minutes depending on which one you fly into. If you're not sure which airport suits you, see our Istanbul Airport vs Sabiha Gokcen comparison.

Sultanahmet — The Historic Peninsula

With Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar all within walking distance, this is the most practical base for first-time visitors focused on sightseeing. Evenings are quiet and restaurants are priced for tourists, but the location makes up for it. Sitting at the western edge of the city, distances to both airports are slightly longer here than from the other three districts.

From Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet, the fixed VIP Mercedes Vito price is 2,300 TRY, covering 53 km / around 62 minutes. From Sabiha Gokcen it's 3,000 TRY, 42 km / 58 minutes. Details: Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet transfer, Sabiha Gokcen to Sultanahmet transfer.

Taksim and Beyoglu — The Heart of the City

Lined with restaurants, cafes and shops along Istiklal Avenue, this is Istanbul's liveliest district, and where most of the nightlife concentrates. Taksim Square has easy public transport links to Besiktas and Sisli, making it an appealing central base.

From Istanbul Airport to Taksim: 45 km / 60 minutes, fixed VIP price 2,300 TRY. From Sabiha Gokcen: 43 km / 47 minutes, 3,000 TRY — the duration from both airports is fairly close. Details: Istanbul Airport to Taksim transfer, Sabiha Gokcen to Taksim transfer.

Besiktas — Quiet Luxury on the Bosphorus

Known for Dolmabahce Palace and its Bosphorus-side promenade, Besiktas is close to Taksim but noticeably calmer. It also has ferry connections to Uskudar and Kadikoy, making it a good base if you plan to explore the Asian side too.

Of the four districts we measured, this one has the shortest time from Sabiha Gokcen: 39 km / 41 minutes, fixed VIP price 3,000 TRY. From Istanbul Airport it's 46 km / 55 minutes, 2,300 TRY. Details: Istanbul Airport to Besiktas transfer, Sabiha Gokcen to Besiktas transfer.

Kadikoy — Local Life on the Asian Side

Known for the Moda seafront, its ferry pier and a dense cafe and bar scene, Kadikoy feels more local than the historic center and tends to offer more affordable accommodation (hotel prices vary and are outside what we can compare — we can only speak to the transfer side). Being on the Asian side, it's noticeably closer to Sabiha Gokcen than the other three districts.

From Sabiha Gokcen to Kadikoy it's just 34 km / 37 minutes — the shortest route in our comparison. From Istanbul Airport it's the longest at 57 km / 69 minutes, fixed VIP price 3,000 TRY. There's currently no fixed VIP price set for the Sabiha Gokcen–Kadikoy route; the current price is calculated live in the booking form based on your address. Frequently Asked Questions

Which district can I explore on foot, without a car?

Sultanahmet and Taksim/Beyoglu are the two most walkable districts — in both, the main sights are within walking distance of each other. In Besiktas and Kadikoy, getting around means a ferry ride or a short taxi/bus trip.

I don't know which airport I'll land at — how does that affect my choice?

If you're landing at Sabiha Gokcen, Kadikoy (34 km) and Besiktas (39 km) are noticeably closer; if you're landing at Istanbul Airport, the difference between the four districts is smaller (45-57 km). Which airport you land at usually depends on your airline — we cover this in our IST vs SAW comparison.

I'm traveling with family — which district works best?

Sultanahmet and Besiktas tend to be more comfortable for families with children thanks to wider sidewalks and a calmer pace. If you're a larger group, transfer with a 14-seat Sprinter is also available — we cover vehicle choice in our family and group transfer guide.

Is the transfer price set by district or by hotel?

The price is fixed by the pricing zone your district belongs to, not by your specific hotel — different hotels in the same district pay the same fixed price. Once you enter your exact address at booking, the price is confirmed instantly.

If my flight lands late at night, will the transfer wait?

Yes. All our VIP transfers include live flight tracking; if your flight is delayed, your driver waits and adjusts to the new arrival time at no extra charge.
